Mani Monday: An Ode To My Favorite Oddity
Happy Monday, loves. You might have noticed that I only posted once last week. Sometimes things happen, like the death of my greatest idols, David Bowie. Just two days after writing a happy birthday post to him, he passed away completely unexpectedly from cancer, and no one saw it coming. It's hard to explain how difficult it is to lose someone you never even met, but felt like you knew because their life helped you know yourself. At any rate, I started a "Goodbye" post that I'll get around to finishing one of these days. David Bowie was an integral part of my growing up, and how I came to be who I am now. It's only fitting I'd write my own little eulogy to him! Look for that sometime soon. In the meantime, I have my nails from the weekend to share with you. Which are, of course, David Bowie themed.
After David Bowie's death, a local spot that I have DJed at a few times before, Blank Space, organized a tribute night. I was very pleased to be involved with the night, and it was a fitting evening full of fun, friends, dancing, and music to send our Starman back to the skies. I wanted to paint my nails appropriately, but was so far into mourning that I only wanted to wear black. Oh a whim, after I'd laid down the black foundation, I threw on a couple lightning bolts as a nod to the Aladdin Sane album cover and called it a day.
The only trouble in paradise with this fun look is that black nail polish is just so hard to keep on your nails! In under 24 hours, I had sustained the chip you see on my middle finger in the above photograph. Luckily, the rest of my nails are still in pretty good condition, so I haven't felt compelled to remove the polish just yet. This black polish is called Liquid Vinyl, and it's from ORLY. It goes on just like the name suggests - if you're not careful, you'll lay down a super thick coat with each stroke. It is very easy to clean up, though, which is very important with such an intense color as black! A dotting tool made the spots easy, and a skinny brush I also had with me helped me make the lightning bolts.
Tonight is ladies' night with some of my friends, so I need to decide what you'll be seeing next week for Mani Monday quickly!
