Currently Coveting: Beth Ditto's Clothing Line
If there's anything that gets us screaming in excitement over here at SOSM, it's when our idols get involved in fashion or beauty, and make it available to the masses. Queer queen of body positivity Beth Ditto just dropped her first clothing line through London's Selfridges and on her website. The collection offers 11 pieces in sizes 14-28, and was announced this past year with the drop of her T-shirt collab (pictured above) with Jean Paul Gaultier. I remember finding out in the fall that she walked and performed for Gaultier's SS16 runway and scrambled to learn more. She's such a badass babe, and at only five feet tall, she rocked that catwalk!
Ditto has been making waves since her early days in the Gossip, the pop-tinged indie rock outfit she fronted from 1999 until just a few years ago. I personally latched onto their work with their albums Standing in the Way of Control and Music For Men, but Beth Ditto's solo music also grabbed my attention with her nod to Madonna in the music video for her song "I Wrote the Book." I've always adored her spunk, her championing of body positivity and self-acceptance, her out, loud & proud queer identity, and her style, of course! I went through a black eyeliner/red lipstick phase in college for several months after watching the video for "Heavy Cross." I just thought she was so glamorous and wanted to be like her.
I'm especially in love with the oversized poncho dress with the almost pop-art feel, and the delicious retro cuts of the dresses. I feel like every babe needs a great piece like the off-white one Ditto is wearing just below this paragraph. It's figure-flattering and sexy without showing too much skin. Also, that sheer jumpsuit is seriously calling my name.
